Recycled Lamp Shade by Samuli Naamanka Awarded EcoDesign Prize at Habitare – Prize Money Distributed Among Four Designers
The first EcoDesign prize was awarded at Habitare’s EcoDesign exhibition. The curator of the exhibition, German lighting fixture designer Ingo Maurer, decided to divide the EUR 5,000 prize sum among four designers. The Finnish interior architect Samuli Naamanka was awarded EUR 2,000, and scrap designer Henrik Enbom (Finland), designer Heath Nash (South Africa) and architect Julien De Smedt (Belgium) were awarded EUR 1,000 each.
This year, the EcoDesign exhibition organised in conjunction with the 2010 Habitare furniture, interior decoration and design fair revolved around lighting fixtures and related new ecological innovations. The most interesting entries in the exhibition were awarded the EcoDesign prize. The prize, donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation, amounted to EUR 5,000.
All four winning lighting fixtures reflected the main judge Ingo Maurer’s ideas of environmental friendliness, concepts, aesthetics and execution.
The central element of the Biodegradable Roll on lamp shade by Samuli Naamanka is its material: polylactic acid made out of starch sugar. Ingo Maurer considered Naamanka’s work the most ecological in the entire exhibition. Furthermore, one of the strengths of the lamp shade is the minor need for material and the ease of production and transportation. By using different types of lamps with the shade, one can easily change the ambience.
Licht der Stiftung by Henrik Enbom, made out of tins, was praised for its recycling-related theme and ”Do It Yourself” spirit. In addition, Ingo Maurer appreciated the playfulness and uniqueness of the lighting fixture.
Fullcolourform Ball by Heath Nash is made of recycled plastic waste. Maurer praised the concept, the activation of the community in the production process by involving them in picking and sorting of scraps, the usage of recycled material, and the design potential of the lighting fixture.
Ecomode by Julien De Smedt opens new perspectives into the excessive use of light in public transport. The bus stop lightning solution that only switches on when a passenger arrives at the stop was praised by Ingo Maurer for its brilliant energy saving concept and the ambience created by the gradually brightening light.
In addition to the EcoDesign prize, another prize was awarded by the main sponsor of the exhibition, Sampo Pankki Private Banking. They awarded the prize to the Päre lighting fixture by Tapio Anttila.
The EcoDesign exhibition showcases 100 lighting fixtures as part of the Habitare fair in the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre from 1 to 5 September.
